James 4:7-8
Overcoming Temptation & Sin

James 4:7-8

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

            James does not recommend that demons should be cast out of believers.  Instead, James simply challenges individual Christians to deal with Satan as a conquered foe who can and must be personally resisted.

            If you become someone who can win against the devils temptations or  his destruction then he must flee.  This means you are victorious.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

            Be content with Christ and know that he is always there for you.  This scripture does not mean that the devil will never come against you.  Paul's life was evident in his ability to be content when he did suffer a need.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

            In this verse God has promised to not only limit our temptation, but also to provide a way of escape in tempting times.  We can call on God and turn from that temptation for that moment, but we will have to resist.

            One thing that we do is spend time continuing to dwell on the temptation instead of trying to remove ourselves from that situation of temptation.

            When I was still smoking and trying to quit I found the best way to help me stay away from smoking was to stay away from people that smoked.  To get myself away from the temptation.

            Now we are going to talk about Samson and Delilah.  We all know the story about how Delilah kept tempting Samson into telling her where his strength was at.

Judges 16:6

So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and with what you may be bound to afflict you.”

            Now, when you read this I want you to picture that this is not Delilah, but the devil himself.  You see the devil uses people to do his dirty work.  He doesn't always come after your mind, but sometime he comes after your eyes.  He wants you to see a friend or a family member, or a stranger.

            You see Samson had already got by the devil working through Delilah a couple of time and he should have just walked away.  However, you know self say that we can withstand a few more times.  Because of Satan working through her Samson lost his life.

Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

            We need to prepare to fight against the enemy.  We need to be prayed up and read up so that we know the word of God and can use it against Satan.

Romans 12:21

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

            Don't let you bad outweigh the good.  We need to be of good mind and a sound mind not of the evil that we can do.

            Out tongue is extremely destructive and we must not allow Satan to use our tongue to hurt someone else.

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
