Colossians 1:16
What Is Your Purpose?

Colossians 1:16

 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

What is your main purpose in life?

            Most people do not know why they exist.  They think they exist because they are a lawyer or a doctor.  Maybe there are extremely smart are self centered.  Some think they exist because they are so perfect that without them no one else could exist.

            But as Christians the answer lives within His word as in Colossians 1:16.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  That means that you and I were created by God and for God.

            Most people are searching for fulfillment.  They often look for it in relationships, in activities, money, or sometimes in religious experiences.  However, God is waiting to fulfill their lives with a purpose.

            They will never find purpose anywhere except in the one that created them.

  1. We were created for Him.

Psalm 100:2-3

Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

            In order to acknowledge your existence you must learn to worship God.  It is not just for the people who want to worship.

So how can stars, water, clouds, animals fruit trees, and mountains praise God?  God created each of these things for specific purposes.  As they fulfill their given roles, it please God and draws attention to His goodness and power.

Psalm 149:1-5

Praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord a new song,
And His praise in the assembly of saints.

Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise His name with the dance;
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.
For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.

Let the saints be joyful in glory;
Let them sing aloud on their beds.

            God wants us to know Him.  We were designed to have a relationship with God.  It please Him when we develop and express that relationship through worship.

  1. Living for His Glory.

1 Peter 2:9-10

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

            Jesus died on a cross, so that we could worship God directly, rather than going through a priest.  Now we have direct access to God.

            We were all created to have a worshipful relationship with God, however sin and spiritual blindness keep many from fulfilling His purpose.

            If we will learn to glorify God, to worship Him and give him all of us then it will help us to build better character, love, and purpose.  As we worship in Him all of our worries and problems are diminished.

  1. God is worthy.

Psalm 96:4-9

For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.

            God is worthy, glorious, strong, holy and the Creator of all things.  God deserves praise, and when we worship we acknowledge He is worthy of our praise.

            We must tremble before Him because, He is holiness, power, and our final judgment.  We must learn to respect Him for He created us.

            When we worship Him we are placing Him above all else.  All kings, gods, people, and power.  If we worship Him then He becomes a light in our heart that can never be blown out unless we do the blowing.

            HE IS OUR PURPOSE!
