Psalm 40:3, & Psalm 3:3
Overcoming Depression, Fear & Anxiety

Psalm 40:3

He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.

Psalm 3:3

But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.

2 Samuel 12:15-23

15 Then Nathan departed to his house.  And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill.

16 David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.

17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them.

18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”

19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”  And they said, “He is dead.”

20 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate.

21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”

22 And he said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’

23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”

            Elijah was discouraged, weary, and afraid. After great spiritual victories over the prophets of Baal, this mighty man of God feared and ran for his life, far away from the threats of Jezebel. And there in the desert, he sat down and prayed, defeated and worn:

Kings 19:4

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my father's!”

            Jonah was angry and wanted to run away. After God called Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach to the people, he fled as far away as could. And after a storm at sea, being swallowed by a giant fish, and then being saved and given a second chance, he obeyed. He preached God’s message to the people of Nineveh. God’s mercy reached out to all people who turned to Him. But instead of rejoicing, Jonah got mad:

Jonah 4:3

“Now O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

And even after God reached out to Jonah again with great compassion, he responded, “…I am angry enough to die.” Jonah 4:9

Moses was grieved over the sin of his people.

Jeremiah wrestled with great loneliness, feelings of defeat, and insecurity.

Even Jesus Himself was deeply anguished over what lay before Him.

            We can be assured, that in whatever we face, Jesus understands our weakness and suffering, our greatest times of temptation and despair, because he too traveled that road, yet without sin.

            In the garden, through the night, Jesus prayed, all alone, calling out to His Father, asking Him for another way:

            “And He said to them, 'My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.' And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. And He was saying, 'Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.'" Mark 14:34-36

            We must learn to fight the fear that Satan brings on us.

Deuteronomy 31:6

 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Psalm 27:3

Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.

Psalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Dream

            A few years ago I had a dream of a woman standing without clothes (I seen no body parts) in a small hall connected to a living room with no furniture.  She appeared to be very sad with their head hanging down.  As I approached her and tried to ask her what was wrong she made no comment.  I asked if she was ok and heard nothing.  When I repeated myself again she flashed in front of me and was in the corner in the other room with her head down and her long hair over her eyes.  You could barely see her face.  She slowly approached me with head still down and I begin to speak words from the Bible.

            All of the sudden she whooshed to the back corner of the room again.  Then she transformed into a giant gecko and started crawling up the wall, onto the ceiling and wormed her way to over my head.  I backed up with a sword in my hands and struck her.  In the name of Jesus I rebuke you Satan, flee from her and harm no more.  In that instant it ran back to the corner, turned back into the woman and sat in the floor looking at me.

No clothes represented no protection from the enemy.

When I first saw her and she had her head down represented fear.

When she went back in the corner so quick was a sign of Satan keeping a stronghold on her life.

When she slowly approached me with her head down was a presentation of depression.

When she swooshed to the back of the wall and turned into a lizard and started up the wall and on to the ceiling was for Anxiety.

When I struck her with the sword that was the Holy Bible that struck Satan within her and sent him away.

Psalm 23:3

He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Psalm 34:17

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
