Luke 23:46
Communion January 2025

Luke 23:46

46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.

Luke 23:33-38

33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.

34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

And they divided His garments and cast lots.

35 And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,

37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”

38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The Holy Communion, known also as the Lord's Supper, represents the greatest expression of God's love for His people.

Two items are used in Communion:

  1. The Bread - which represents Jesus' body that was ripped and broken before and during His crucifixion.
  2. The Juice - which represents Jesus' blood that was shed.

When Jesus hung on the cross he not only took away our sins, but he took on all of our sicknesses and diseases on what was originally a perfect and healthy body, so that we can walk in divine health.

Isaiah 53:5

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

If we could have walked with  Jesus while He was here on earth what would we have seen.  We could have watched Jesus do miracles and teach.

When I was young my Dad used to take us to all kinds of things that had to do with ministries.  We went to the Reunion Arena to watch Jimmy Swaggart preach a couple of times.  I also remember us going to see the Hinson in concert in Fort Worth as well as they used to come to our church to sing.  We also went and seen the Imperials in concert as well.

There was also many memories of going to tent revivals.  As well I seen many people that were healed from all kinds of things.  We had a Fellowship Meeting and a Youth Rally every month and the churches were packed.

We even went to a Rally one time when we had to try and push the bus out of a ditch.  We also had to help push people out of the parking lot at the Lighthouse when it rained and people could not get out of the mud.

We were taught who Jesus was and how to act in church with all the respect in the world.  We were taught how to stay on our knees in prayer to get the answers we needed.

I can remember times that we would pray until we saw a breakthrough to the throne of God.  We would not leave church most nights until 10:00PM or 11:00PM, sometimes later.

Let's don't forget who Jesus is and what He did for us on that day.

I believe that because of who Jesus was that He spent nearly every waken hour trying to preach the gospel to those that were lost and dying and performing miracle after miracle.

Jesus also took care of 12 disciples and taught thousands of people while He walked here on earth.

In Luke 22:20, Jesus tells us that the cup is the “new covenant in My blood”, and then apostle Paul tells us that the blood of Jesus brings forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14, Ephesians 1:7).

On the night that He was betrayed, Jesus ate His last supper with His disciples. And knowing what He would accomplish through His sacrifice, He instituted the Holy Communion (Luke 22:19–20, 1 Corinthians 11:24–25).

His loving instruction is that we are to remember Him as we partake of the Holy Communion. Jesus wanted us conscious of how His body was broken for our wholeness, and His blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins. And whenever we partake in this consciousness, we “proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Luke 23:44-46

44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.

Today, when we partake of the bread, we are declaring that Jesus’ health and divine life flows in our mortal bodies. And when we partake of the cup, we are declaring that we are forgiven and have been made righteous. Jesus’ blood gives us right standing before God, and we can go boldly into God’s presence (Hebrews 4:16). When we pray, we can be sure that God hears us!

TO PARTAKE, FIRST, HOLD THE BREAD IN YOUR HAND AND SAY:

Thank You, Father, for the gift of Your Son. By the stripes that fell on His back, my body is healed from the crown of my head to the very soles of my feet. Every cell, every organ, every function of my body is healed, restored, and renewed. In Jesus’ name, I believe and I receive.

1 Corinthians 11:24

24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,  “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

NEXT, TAKE THE CUP IN YOUR HAND AND SAY:

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your precious blood. Your sin-free, disease-free, poverty-free life is in Your blood. And Your shed blood has removed every sin from my life. Through Your blood, I am forgiven of all my sins—past, present and future—and made completely righteous. Today, I celebrate and partake of the inheritance of the righteous, which is preservation, healing, wholeness and provision. Thank You Lord Jesus, for loving me. Amen.

1 Corinthians 11:25

25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
