Matthew 8:23-27
Find Peace in Your Storm

Matthew 8:23-27

23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

            During a single 20-minute thunderstorm, 125 million gallons of water can fall to the earth as rain.

            The temperature of a lightning bolt is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit - about five times as hot as the sun's surface.

            A thunderstorm can produce more electricity in twenty minutes than a big city can consume in a week.

            Tornadoes can travel over 60 miles per hour.  The winds inside a tornado can circle over 200 miles per hour.

Smith Wigglesworth

"We were sleeping one night, when the manifestation of evil filled the room and the spirit of fear gripped both of us. Polly was so frightened she could not open her eyes. I suddenly sat up, in the bed, and saw the devil. I rubbed my eyes to be sure, it was him. I said, ‘Oh! It's only you.' I then turned to Polly and told her to go back to sleep, it was nothing of consequence, and I laid my head back down. Suddenly an overwhelming sense of peace and love filled the room and we had the most blessed sleep ever."

Jesus is your peace in the middle of a storm.

Psalm 91:1-6

91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

            Satan has no power over you if you walk in the covering of God.  It does not matter what comes our way because God can calm the storm in our lives.

            I have been in the middle of many storms in my life.  Some of those were real life storms and some of those were storms where people have tried to destroy me.

            Back in the mid 80's my Dad, Mom, and myself were out at Lewisville Lake on in the Shady Shores area.  We got our little V-bottom boat in the water and head across the cove to where we had a trot line dropped out across the cove.  We started running the trot line and we looked up to see a thunder cloud started to develop over our head.  As we got about half way down the line it started to get dark and the wind began to slowly pick up.

            Dad said we better just pull the line up and see if we have anything else of size and if we do we will go straight to it and take it off the line and then drop it and we will head back in to load up.  We agreed and took one more off the line and then headed back.  As we got almost to the shore line it started to sprinkle rain and the wind started to pick up.  When we got to the boat ramp Dad and Mom got out and head back up to back the trailer in the water while I held onto the boat.  Then I started to load the boat as the rain began to poor down.

            As I looked up across the water I seen a boat that was coming across the water where I could only see the man's head over the top of the boat and the boat was standing almost straight up in the air with the boat bouncing out of the water occasionally.  I did not think the men would make it back and probably drown.

            Someone they made it back and they were so scared by the time they got back that they were as white as a sheet.  However they made it to safety.

            In the middle of your storm God is there.  You may get wet you may get scared, however with God all things are possible and you will make it through your storm.

Isaiah 41:10-13

10 Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

11 “Behold, all those who were incensed against you
Shall be ashamed and disgraced;
They shall be as nothing,
And those who strive with you shall perish.
12 You shall seek them and not find them—
Those who contended with you.
Those who war against you
Shall be as nothing,
As a nonexistent thing.
13 For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand,
Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’

            In June of 2009 I was still addicted to smoking.  I had been smoking for more than 20 years when God showed me that He was protecting me.  On that day I was outside smoking and a storm was brewing.  As the darkness cover the area and the wind was blowing pretty hard I finished my cigarette and started inside the house.  When I walked in my back door and took about 2 to 3 steps in the house a massive tree fell right outside the back door where I had just walked in the house.

            God was on my side protecting me for what He had for me to do.  10 years later I took this church and began to Pastor.  In the middle of a storm God has you on His mind.

Psalm 118:6

The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.

What can man do to me?

John 16:33

33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Call on God and he will calm your storm.
